Assessment of pain

After an operation or if your chid has pain for another reason it is important to regularly assess the pain in order to adopt a view as to how intensive it is, where the pain is to be found and the effect of the current treatment.

To estimate the pain amongst newborn babies is difficult. In the case of the smallest infants the assessment of pain is carried out on the basis of different kinds of behaviour. Depending on the infant’s age and development, it is possible to subsequently assess the pain with different measurement tools. The face pain scale is an expression of pain through different facial expressions while the numerical pain scale enables the child to express the pain on a scale of 1 to 10.

Children with disabilities can be hard to assess using the aforementioned scales. This means that pain for these children is often underestimated. In order to enable the satisfactory relief of pain it is, therefore, important to find out about the infant’s behaviour and mode of expression in normal circumstances. In this case, you have a very significant role to play as family/next of kin.
