Treatment of child with pain

The treatment of your child must be adapted to age and stage of development. Smaller children are in greater need of a secure environment and support from their parents compared with teenagers who have a considerable need for integrity and control. This does not imply, however, that the parents are not important.

Certain important key points in respect of children with pain:

  • Fear is common in all age groups. Find out if your child is afraid and about what.
  • Offer the child sufficient time for information prior to e.g. a physiotherapy session or a blood test.
  • Always offer encouragement, even when it was not possible to perform what was being prepared for.
  • Be honest. Do not say that it will not be painful if there is the least risk that what is being carried out may be unpleasant.
