For your childs safety it is important that you follow the individual fasting instructions that you receive. This is due to the risk of vomiting during anesthesia that can lead to serious airway complications.

Instructions for fasting prior to anesthesia can vary for different types of food and drink depending on how quickly they are emptied from the stomach. Liquids generally leave the stomach more quickly than solid foods. Please observe that even different liquids require different fasting times. For example, orange juice, liquid yogurt and carbonated soft drinks require longer time than water, apple juice and coffee. Breastmilk and milk replacements are somewhere between liquids and solid food. If anything is unclear, contact your childs hospital ward with questions.
